Shared Responsibility for Cloud Security What Is It?

Recommended Posts

Have you heard of the shared responsibility model. As a customer, do you know your obligations when it comes to cloud security? That's right: although most users do not pay attention to this point, hiring a cloud service (especially saas, software as a service ) does not mean having backup and data protection “included” in the package. In fact, it is very common for companies or end users that invest in cloud services to believe that all responsibility for resource management – which includes security, compliance and costs themselves – belongs to the cloud provider. For this reason, to avoid mistakes, frustration and – the worst – a bitter loss of strategic and sensitive data , it is necessary to be aware of all the terms of the contract, with emphasis on the aforementioned shared responsibility . Below, learn more about this extremely important topic for businesses and users, in addition to checking out tips for not neglecting your protection due to lack of alert.

What is the shared responsibility model. In simple terms, shared responsibility is a model used by cloud providers to define who is responsible for different service levels (slas). This is a model used by almost all public clouds. In contracts closed with providers, shared responsibility is one of the topics or clauses, requiring  detailed analysis. Basically, this means that the burden of security management is not restricted to the provider, but is shared with customers. Contrary to Phone Number List what many people think, contracting the service is not synonymous with “everything being resolved” – the customer must do his part for protection. To cite an example, we can speak of the renowned aws, which divides the responsibilities using the terms “cloud security ” (aws domain) and “ cloud security ” ( user domain). At this point, it is worth mentioning that cloud services but also by individuals on a daily basis.

Gmail itself and office 365 are classic and common. examples of applications in this modality. From this perspective, many of the saas backup services – such as the aforementioned aws (amazon web services), google drive, microsoft azure, google cloud and microsoft exchange – apply shared responsibility. Although these responsibilities vary according to the type of contract and the provider, it is imperative that the customer is aware of these conditions, understanding that they will always be in charge of certain functions and management. What are the provider's responsibilities? First – and to increase understanding of the shared responsibility model – it is important to emphasize that there are several layers of service in a cloud computing environment. The lowest consists of physical infrastructure, which involves data centers (centers that process data), internet connection, equipment maintenance and power supply.
